Much like classical computers, quantum computers also require implementation of error correction schemes to robustly perform computing tasks. Ultimately, a large-scale universal quantum computer will consist of many error-corrected logical qubits, where each logical qubit is protected by error correction implemented on several physical qubits. This require extraordinary resources and engineering efforts. This project will design error correction schemes and test their performance by implementation on the current generation of quantum hardware, also known as noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers available via cloud access. The project will also look at the possibilities to train machine learning algorithms for autonomous detection and correction of quantum errors.
