System identification is a core signal processing discipline which studies how best to estimate the parameters of a model from observations. Biological systems, such as cell signalling pathways, have characteristics quite different from classically engineered systems. Furthermore, there are generally more restrictions on the type of measurements that can be made on biological systems compared with engineered systems. It is therefore timely to refine and extend the theory of system identification to increase its effectiveness in systems biology.
