VetCompass: Big data and real-time surveillance for veterinary science

Project Leader: Tim Baldwin
Staff: Karin Verspoor

Primary Contact: Tim Baldwin (tbaldwin@unimelb.edu.au)
Keywords: natural language processing
Disciplines: Computing and Information Systems
Domains: Networks and data in society

The VetCompass project will maximise the quality and efficacy of Australian veterinary research and allow us to
answer previously elusive research and clinical questions. It will be the first ever nationwide surveillance system
that monitors and records diseases and their treatments in our community. The impact will be far-reaching for the
veterinary community and the data will enable us to prioritise areas of need in society, identify biosecurity risks to
the Australian population, and redefine best practice in the veterinary sector. Advances in these domains will
enable veterinary professionals to deliver a vastly improved level of care for companion animals that improve the
quality of life for animal owners and the animals themselves.
