Spatial cognition studies have demonstrated the importance of landmarks in navigation. To measure the significance of different landmarks in navigation, most existing studies have relied on manual evaluation by experts, which is expensive and difficult to scale. This proposal aims at automating the computation of landmark significance through discovering "grassroots wisdom" from social network data such as tweets and Foursquare check-ins, which contain geo-tagged texts describing different landmarks. The research results will enable next-generation navigation systems based on landmarks. This project will serve as a prerequisite for future studies on building knowledge bases for geographical entities such as landmarks.
