In March 2014, we will commission the new Extreme Air-Sea Interaction facility in the Michell Hydrodynamics Laboratory. This facility is the largest and highest quality of its kind in the world. It is designed to simulate the ocean with air blowing over a tank of water at speeds of up to 40 m/s. The water tank has dimensions of 60 x 2 x 2 m and the air flows over approximately 40 metres of water. A variety of projects are anticipated: studying the turbulent flow fields in the air and water; measuring gas transport from the water to the air; measuring evaporation rates; and analysing the influence of the air flow on wind-generated and mechanically generated waves.
